Mother’s Feast

Today is the feast of Mother Teresa.  I hope the novena prayers I posted these past nine days have been helpful.  (They’re from Saints for Our Times.)

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us!

Novena to Mother Teresa, Day 9

September 4, 2008

MOTHER TERESA, MISSIONARY OF CHRIST

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, you called Jesus your only love, your all in all. You never simply did social work, as you insisted, because Jesus animated and inspired everything you did.  In your entire life you profoundly imitated his love and mercy.

Mother Teresa, pray for me, that Jesus may become every more truly my all in all. Help me to look to him, to imitate him, to love him in everything I do, in the person that I am.  Teach me to recognize him in those around me and to respond to him generously.

Novena prayer:

Mother Teresa, you came to the aid of so many people during your life on earth. So I come to you now, confident in your willingness to help me in my need. (Mention your request here.) Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, servant of the poorest of the poor, pray for us!

MOTHER TERESA, MISSIONARY OF FAITH

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, Jesus invited you to participate deeply in his words on the cross, “I thirst,” and so your interior life was marked by a feeling of profound alienation from God.  You felt rejected and abandoned by him for more than fifty years, up until the day of your death.  Despite this, you prayed, preached, and ministered as though you could sense God whispering constantly in your ear.

Mother Teresa, by your prayers, obtain for me the gift of a deeper faith. Help me to live in the knowledge of God’s constant guidance and grace, without relying on proofs or experience of his action.  Help me to trust God and to entrust every moment of my life to his providential care.

Novena prayer:

Mother Teresa, you came to the aid of so many people during your life on earth. So I come to you now, confident in your willingness to help me in my need. (Mention your request here.) Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, servant of the poorest of the poor, pray for us!

MOTHER TERESA, MISSIONARY OF JOY

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, you called us to smile at one another with a big smile! In the places most crowded with pain and disappointment, and in the midst of your own experience of spiritual lifelessness, you radiated the joy of Christ.

Mother Teresa, in the midst of my own frustrations and the sorrows of our world, show me how to rejoice. Teach me to smile at others.  Obtain for me the grace of a joyful heart that never ignores the difficulties of life but, in spite of them, abides in God’s love.

Novena Prayer:

Mother Teresa, you came to the aid of so many people during your life on earth. So I come to you now, confident in your willingness to help me in my need. (Mention your request here.) Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, servant of the poorest of the poor, pray for us!

MOTHER TERESA, MISSIONARY OF HUMAN DIGNITY

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, you cleaned the infected sores and kissed the dirty faces of the most rejected people in the world.  You embraced the most unpleasant tasks and ran into the foulest places — all because you recognized the dignity of every human person.  You refused to allow the world to forget those it would prefer to ignore.

Mother Teresa, I want to learn this hard lesson.  Help me never to turn my back on anyone in need because they might repel me or are unattractive or unpleasant.  Help me to embrace those who are most ignored by my own community.  Let my own life be a radiant witness to the dignity of each person.

Novena Prayer:

Mother Teresa, you came to the aid of so many people during your life on earth. So I come to you now, confident in your willingness to help me in my need. (Mention your request here.) Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, servant of the poorest of the poor, pray for us!

MOTHER TERESA, MISSIONARY OF THE EUCHARIST

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, every day of your life hinged on the Eucharist. No matter how crowded your days or how waery your body, you made sure to spend long periods of time each day before the Blessed Sacrament.   You confessed that without our Lord in the Eucharist, you would have had no strength to act.

Mother Teresa, teach me to draw my strength only from the presence and the nourishment of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.  Teach me to know his presence there, to receive him worthily, and to allow myself to be broken and shared for those in need.

Novena Prayer:

Mother Teresa, you came to the aid of so many people during your life on earth. So I come to you now, confident in your willingness to help me in my need. (Mention your request here.) Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, servant of the poorest of the poor, pray for us!

MOTHER TERESA, MISSIONARY OF THE FAMILY

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, you asked us to love our families first.  The well-being of families had an important place in your prayers and your work.

Mother Teresa, by your prayers, help us form our families into communuties of love and life.  Teach us to love and serve our spouses in the same way you loved Jesus, whom you joyfully called your demanding spouse.  Teach us to love and serve our children as you loved the poor whom God called you to serve.  Never let my parents or siblings suffer the poverty of being unloved, forgotten, or unforgiven by me.

Novena Prayer:

Mother Teresa, you came to the aid of so many people during your life on earth. So I come to you now, confident in your willingness to help me in my need. (Mention your request here.) Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, servant of the poorest of the poor, pray for us!

MOTHER TERESA, MISSIONARY OF LIFE

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, in your work for the poor, in your interventions on behalf of criminals on death row, and in your vocal opposition to legal abortion, you spoke out strongly to uphold the dignity of every human life.  You made the witness of your life consistent with your words in a way that few others have achieved.

Mother Teresa, pray for the world we live in, which has forgotten the value of human life.  Pray for the Church, that our courage and our efforts on behalf of life will remain strong.  Pray for me, that I will never fear to acknowledge and defend the sacredness of every person’s life by my choices, my attitudes, my words, my prayer, and my love.

Novena Prayer:

Mother Teresa, you came to the aid of so many people during your life on earth. So I come to you now, confident in your willingness to help me in my need. (Mention your request here.) Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, servant of the poorest of the poor, pray for us!

MOTHER TERESA, MISSIONARY OF PEACE

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, you often repeated the prayer of St. Francis: “Make me an instrument of your peace.”  God answered your prayer in a way that even our violent and self-destructive culture could not miss.

Continue to be a prophet of peace for us today, Mother Teresa.  Guide us along the paths that lead to peace in our world, in our families, in our hearts.  I join my prayer to yours: “Make me an instrument of your peace.”  Pray that I, too, might become an instrument of Christ’s peace to those around me.

Novena Prayer:

Mother Teresa, you came to the aid of so many people during your life on earth. So I come to you now, confident in your willingness to help me in my need. (Mention your request here.) Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, servant of the poorest of the poor, pray for us!

MOTHER TERESA: MISSIONARY OF CHARITY

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, your works of love caught our world’s attention as you radiated God’s thirsting love for humanity.  Calling yourself a tiny pencil in God’s hand, you allowed him to write a bold love letter to the people of the twentieth century.

Teach me to love, Mother Teresa, and show me how to love in the circumstances of my own life.  By your prayers, your example, your simple words so full of wisdom, teach me what it means to love Jesus in other people, to giev until it hurts, especially when he appears to me in the distressing disguise of the poor.

Novena Prayer:

Mother Teresa, you came to the aid of so many people during your life on earth. So I come to you now, confident in your willingness to help me in my need. (Mention your request here.) Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, servant of the poorest of the poor, pray for us!
