4 American martyrs

Today is the 28th anniversary of the death of four American Catholic women killed in El Salvador in 1980, while working (against a repressive military government) to improve the social conditions for the poor in that country.  Sr. Dorothy Kazel, Sr. Ita Ford, Sr. Maura Clarke, and laywoman Jean Donovan were raped and shot by men associated with the Salvadoran army.

Earlier that same year, Archbishop Oscar Romero was also killed, while celebrating Mass, for similar reasons and also by gunmen associated with the Salvadoran army.
